Intelligent Reliability 4.0 (iRel40)

iRel40 - supporting and sustaining the success of the electronics industry in the European area

Institute of Electronics and Photonics became a partner in the new H2020 research project "Intelligent reliability 4.0 (iRel40)", which has been launched on May 1st, 2020 in the framework of the European Joint Undertaking ECSEL JU. Due to the ongoing miniaturization of electronic components, reliability becomes an increasing challenge on the device and system level for future complex applications. The aim of the project is to improve the reliability of electronic components and systems by reducing failure rates along the entire value chain. Progressive methods such as Physics of Failure and Artificial Intelligence will be used to gain crucial insight and will be used to push overall quality levels and reliability of electronic devices and systems. The outputs of the project will strengthen production along the value chain and support the sustainable success of Electronic Components and Systems investment in Europe. Through collaboration between academia, industry, and knowledge institutes on this challenging issue of reliability, the project secures more than 25,000 jobs in the 25 participating manufacturing and testing sites in Europe. The main targeted areas, which will benefit from the results of the projects, are new device chips, applications in energy efficiency, e-mobility, autonomous driving, and IoT.

The project is coordinated by Infineon Technologies, the world's leading manufacturing and research company for electronic components and systems. For the first time, this unique project brings together the world's leading reliability experts and European manufacturing experience to create a sustainable pan-European reliability community. In the frame of iRel40, 75 universities, companies, and research institutions from 13 European member states and associated countries will collaborate on the reliability topics and form one of the strongest consortiums among ECSEL JU projects. The Institute of Electronics and Photonics of STU has long been well established in the power electronics research community, working closely with Infineon Technologies, imec, FHG, Padova University, III-V Lab, and other key players in power electronics and will be a valuable partner in the project.

iRel40 is a European co-funded innovation project that has been granted by the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 876659. The funding of the project comes from the Horizon 2020 research programme and participating countries. National funding is provided by Germany, including the Free States of Saxony and Thuringia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.
